Let’s start with a little true and false.

Honolulu is the Big Island.

False. This is a very common misunderstanding for those of us on the mainland. Honolulu is the capital of the state of Hawaii, and the largest and most famous city located on the island of Oahu. The Big Island is the actual island of Hawaii and is the largest of the islands that make up the state.

There are all-inclusive resorts in Hawaii.

False. There are no all-inclusive resorts in Hawaii, many hotels in Hawaii will offer a breakfast plan (one meal per day) with no alcoholic drinks included. It’s common for accommodations to offer studios with living areas and mini-kitchenettes. You would never want to be tied to your resort in Hawaii! You will want to get out and explore the island, try the local cuisine, and take in all the island has to offer.

Flights are expensive.

True. Flights can be quite pricey depending on where you are flying from. As Hawaii is becoming more and more popular, airlines continue to offer more flight options. Budget friendly airline, Southwest Airlines, just announced offering flights to Hawaii starting this summer! Similar to all world-wide travel, plan ahead and watch for fares and you will find reasonably priced options.

Everything you need to see is in Honolulu.

True. For anyone visiting Hawaii for the first time I do recommend at least a stop in Oahu, and to make time for sites in Honolulu. The city is very impressive, the beaches are wonderful, and checking out the Pearl Harbor museum is a must.
